What’s the latest online trend? Alexis:
Subscription apps. You’ll find them on the Mac App Store and iOS App Store, and many come with an option to try-before-you-subscribe; a limited trial period, or extra features when you sign up for the monthly or annual subscription.
What’s the problem?
Ongoing monthly payments can add up.
Any examples of a better option?
One of my favorite photo applications is Luminar from Skylum. The whole package is priced to be less than Bear after the second year. Yes, Luminar gets upgraded every couple of years, but I’m not forced to pay by the month and not forced to upgrade until I need to for macOS technical reasons. I paid once. It works. I use it.
I want to support app developers so I’m willing to pay for what I use, but I have limits; financial limits, monthly budget limits, and when those limits crash and clash with an ongoing subscription bill, I have to back up and give more consideration to what apps I try and where I spend my money.
